Greetings from the Yahoo Brain in New York City!
Hope you're watching the live Answers webcast at http://advision.webevents.yahoo.com/asktheplanet/brain.html !

Have you tried contacting your local municpal offices? I know in my town, the firefighting corps is entirely voluntary, coordinated under the auspices of the local government. When I lived in New York City, of course the FDNY was a city agency, and a big one at that.

Either way, big city or small town, the first call you should make should be to your local government office, or perhaps you should even check on their website.

Hope this helps, and good luck in your career choice!

In most cases you would need to check with HR offices of City Government about openings and qualification's for the position of Firefighter. Once you apply and take whatever test required, you would get an interview, from there it will be how well you did on the above before you advance any further. I would strongly advise you to talk to veteran Firefighters about the job, it's not for everyone.
once you are sure about your decision, push on and give it all you've got.

I have a son and daughter that is both fireman/woman and one is a Paramedic the other EMT both started at the local Vol. Fire Company and they provided them with all the training required and now my son is the Assist. Fire Chief and also a paid Firefighter/Paramedic, teaches classes both paid and unpaid.
My daughter is a paid EMT for the local Ambulance Authority.
The local Vol. Fire Companies is always looking for Vol. or you can look for a Firefighting academy in your area. If you need help with the search email me and I'll be glad to see what I can do to help you. elizcurrence56@yahoo.com

I worked at a Fire Dept for a little while ...only as a Paramedic for the Santa Ana, CA Fire Dept, station #1 house, ,but I worked amongst fire fighters, and was the only girl working at the time, so I know how you get into it from what the other Fire Fighters told me..

They went to the Fire Academy and went through a long training and testing course, and also you are taught EMT training but if you really want to increase your chances of getting hired and accepted into a Dept. you should go to Paramedic School which is 6 months long.....dept's these days ..depending on which ones will require you to be a certified Medic.

What city do you live in?
THe best thing to do first is get your EMT certification. Usually done through teaching hospitals or community colleges. Takes about 6 months and costs about $1000.
Then contact your area's regional council of governments, or each individual district and ask about their application procedures. Expect a lot of tests, psych evaluations, waiting... anticipate about a year or more before you get hired. But use the time to get in great physical shape, volunteer, and work as an EMT. You will need that experience.

Become a volunteer and try it out. If you enjoy being a volunteer firefighter, look into becoming a full time firefighter.

try volunteering at a local fire department. When they get to know you a little, ask them how you can become a real firefighter and I'm sure they'll help you out.

check a community college or technical college near you, since most of them have fire service technology degrees. I started out as an emt for a small department and slowly went up the chain...if you really want to though, i would seriously look at the schools since paid departments are going to look closer at what actual training and education you have received before they offer you employment...stay out of the volunteer units unless you are just wanting to help your community, the education will get you a better leg up on things. good luck!

Walk into the local fire department and ask questions. How do I apply for a job with the FD? Many stations may have the application available.

Did you see Ladder 49?

First off, call your local fire department - they can tell you what classes you need to take, and when the Fire Fighter tests are & how to prepare for them. You also need to be able to pass the physical portion, as well.

Most Fire Departments would be happy to give you as much info as you want - you just have to ask! Good luck!!
