Let me add to the comments to be 'self-aware' is coming into the present moment we call NOW and recognizing how and what we are feeling. All your senses are heightened so that you will experience the 'full' embodiment of awareness of your self, your being, your spirit, how the spirit interacts with the physical 'you' while you are encountering and dealing with a situation/experience. And especially taking notice of all of what you were feeling, your thoughts, what you saw, smelled, tasted, etc. these things are imprinted in your memory. What I call moments in time.

Because your spirit is with you all the time, it brings to you by way of all of your senses - awareness. Most of the time we are captivated by the societal or the physical level that we are too busy to recognize the spiritual level interacting with us and life remains a mystery because we don't connect with it until a crisis occur. That's a shame really. We tend to miss alot in living and experiencing life this way.

"I think, so am I"

well, not sure if that famous sentence I translated correctly.
its a simply philosophy by a famous Thinker.
He stated, when somebody is thinking, so he does exist.
Sound for me like to be self-aware. Kind of a prove for your own existence.
Usually this term is used for "low level" animals or how they are called. For instance: humans are self-aware, dogs and cats are self-aware, rats are, etc....now to smaller animals its getting not so easy to know, like for worms, ants....we asume they also are self-aware. Now what about smaller organism like a sperm, an unborn baby, a Virus......
When does a fresh born baby becomes self-aware ? I guess, thats what it means in a psychological term.

One who is self-aware is cognoscente of how they are behaving and being perceived. They are able to be objective about in how they view themselves. Everyone is to one degree or another, self-aware. However only those who are very secure with themselves, desirous for personal growth, and unafraid of what others think, can benefit from being self-aware. At the other end of the spectrum, pathological liars, are also self aware, but use their mastery of it to deceive others.

Self awareness is stepping outside your own eyes and seeing yourself as your truly are, instead of the person you want yourself to be. You are aware of the things you do, things you say, places you go, people you meet, instead of just going through life and accepting it. You are consciously aware of every decision you make and have already weighed the pros and cons before coming to that decision.

Self-awareness is attained when one understands oneself fully in every sense of the word..
If i were self-aware, i would know every aspect of my personality, physical well-being, what i am capable of, how i react in certain situations, what my real weak points are etc..
We invest a lot of time and effort trying to get into the psyche of others, especially those of the opposite sex.. We hardly give any thought to ourselves..
What most people fail to realize is that it is more difficult to understand oneself than it is to understand others..

Honest introspection would lead to self-awareness.. I say 'honest', because sometimes we are not willing to accept some aspect of ourselves.. We should never be in denial of who we are..
Lack of self-awareness leads to some familiar situations faced by a lot of people. Sometimes when people tell you that you are a certain type of person, you just reject what they have to say.. The thing is that they could be right, one can never be totally sure that they are not.. That is because they probably see something in you that you yourself have failed to notice..

Simply put, it means you know yourself and how you're going to act, or react to something.

For instance, I got home last night and plugged my cell phone into the charger as soon as I walked in the door because I knew that if I waited, I'd forget. I know myself well enough to know I'd forget to do it, so I did it while it was on my mind. I was self-aware that I'm forgetful.

It is to understand what motivates your behavior, to know your limitations, to know your strengths, fears, and what drives you as a person. Self-awareness comes with age and experience if you are lucky. Some people never are.

Self awareness is simply being aware of yourself at different places, situations, and with different people. KNOW THYSELF!
