Because the rise and the going of the steps on an escalator are much larger than a fixed staircase, and so not well suited for walking.

If u notice that the escalator has bigger steps than your normal staircase, so if there are 20 steps for both escalator and staircase, u will find that climbing the staircase will be easier.

Escalators' steps have more height than the steps of a staircase. Escalator manufactures do this to ensure proper function of the escalator; which is odd because they still don't work properly all of the time.

The escalator "steps" are actually farther apart (taller) than a standard step. A standard step is usually around 6 inches (depending on building code) where as an escalator step is typically 8.5. 2.5 inches actually makes a big difference.

Because the steps are larger and of course, the deadly ragged edge can make us a little tense in case we might stumble. OUCH
