make it look like a group contribution, try "sir we all think you are doing a great job"...just act like your speaking on behalf of every one. Talk about things that boost every ones ego about what you are involved in, that way the boss automatically feels like things are working successfully. A happy crew makes any boss feel good.

It's not wrong if your intention is good. Just that you got to be wise not to appear that you are curry favoring (Singapore term for suck up.)
Showing Appreciation 101
1. Praise appropriately. Not as and when you like.
2. Praise not just your boss if the rest of the team has done well too!
3. Have integrity. If you are always unappreciate to people and suddenly you become so full of praise for your boss, what are you trying to invite?!
4. Be interested in the people around you, not just your boss. Then you'll know who you can appreciate them for.
5. Talk to your co-workers about your boss's achievements. Let them take the joy with you. Your boss will definitely be happy when more people appreciate his work.
6. Most importantly, Be sincere! No one appreciates a false appreciation.

Depends! I work at job where my boss is very prepared, and his decisions make sense. Sometimes I tell her she's great. I don't feel it's sucking up because it's true. But at an old job of mine, the boss was really dumb, made really stupid decisions, everyone felt that way and simply had to follow orders, in that case, it would very much look like sucking up if someone told him he was doing a fine job.

Compliments to having meaning must be given at appropriate time....so if you're choosing to compliment your boss insincerely or when there is no justification then definitely NOT GOOD. But say working on a project as a team and hit a wall and the boss is the one who finally comes up with the ground breaking idea...then very appreciated and most appropriate. A rat smells like a rat no matter how you perfume it.....and a suck up smacks loudly and often....

If you thank the boss for doing something that everyone benefits from, then you will not look like you are trying to be the "teacher's pet".
However if you praise attributes of your boss or something they have done specifically for you, co-workers will see you as trying to get favor with the boss.
It is appropriate to thank a boss for doing something for you specifically, but it should be done in private.

No, unless you treat them the same way to your co-workers you are gonna look like a suck up! Buy your boss an appreciation card and slide it under his/her door.

They might think you are sucking up, a kissass and a boot-licker. If your boss needs to be praised for a job well done, let his superior do it. You just shake his hand and that's it. The employees under him should be the one that is praised because without them, including you of course, your boss and your company is nothing.

It would make your co-workers a little uncomfortable if you praise your boss in front of them. What would your boss think of them if your co-workers wouldn't say the same thing to him?

Wrong? No. Poor decision, probably. Makes you look like a suck-up and nobody likes a suck-up, including your boss.

If you truly appreciate your boss, tell your boss that you appreciate what he/she does when he/she does it. Show appreciation for your co-workers as well. Bake something and take it to the office, everyone will appreciate it and they will know you appreciate them just as much as you appreciate your boss.
