There seems to be linguistically few words to describe this reltaionship type. Though on the flip side of the coin there is no shortage of words. Well in our patriarchal society names for women lovers is common (like the Eskimos words for snow). We, in society, tend to judge more critically women's actions and behaviors so we call them mistress, slut, whore, home wrecker and the like. While men tend to be called lover, stud (a word for animals used for their seed to impregnate others) or paramour. Gigolo is the only negative word typically associated with a "man on the side". The lack of verbiage related to how women are not supposed to be as sexual or wantant of sex. While the role of men is to spread his seed and prove his masculinity. While it can be biological (maintaining the value of the gene pool and assuring your line will continue into the next generation) or cultural (I am man see my virility)....it is a continuance of stereotypes and reiteration of gender roles.

calling a woman a 'mistress' usually means that she is financially dependent on her male lover.
when a man depends on his female lover for income or housing he is usually termed a 'gigolo'.

"Adulterer" works well, since a "mistress" is usually a woman kept by a married man.
"Philanderer" works too, but connotes promiscuity.
