Do you know a great philosopher that is consistently ignored by the philosophy classbooks and can you convince me to read something from that philosopher in just 10 lines?

Maurice Merleau-Ponty, contemporary of Sartre, Camus and Simone DeBeuvoir, believed that "being exists in the interrogative manner," and whose posthumously published book "the Visible and the Invisible," expanded on the concept of reality as "Flesh." His analysis of the the hand as a touching, i.e. an organ of percipience, and a also a touched, i.e. an object in a world of object, and the "reversibility:" pertaining between these two seemily irreconciable modes, is utterly staggering in its poetic simplicity and revolutionary implications for metaphysics. If you get a chance, you may find it very helpful.

I think James Nickel is your man. He wrote the entry "Human Rights" in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy. You should also read his Philosophical Quarterly award winning essay "Poverty and Rights." His main argument is that subsistence alone is to minimal a conception and generally gives too little attention to people's ability to be active participants and contributors. He completely breaks down Human Rights and how and why they are not effective.

Aristotle! I know he's not ignored by philosophy classes but people always dismiss his philosophy. People always say how great Plato is but if you ask me Aristotle is so much better than Plato. Aristotle was well over 1,000 years ahead of his time. He's also one of the first biologists using modern methods. Nicomachean Ethics is a personal favourite.

IANAP, but just for me, philosophy is inseparably intertwined with psychology. Psychological and ethological analysis of human philosophy (both religious and secular) gives most interesting and wonderful results.

I would probably choose Erich Fromm for an answer to your question, even though he was primarily a psychologist. But I'm almost sure you already know him :)

Doogie Howser, MD...He once said at the end of his show as he was having a philosophical moment and typing on his PC "Of all the muscles in the body, the hardest one to heal is the heart"

Rupert Sheldrake.

Applies scientific method to try and prove spiritual ideas.

And the rest of my lines I will just use to quote him:

"If we want to stick to the idea of natural laws, we could say that as nature itself evolves, the laws of nature also evolve, just as human laws evolve over time. But then how would natural laws be remembered or enforced? The law metaphor is embarrassingly anthropomorphic. Habits are less human-centred. Many kinds of organisms have habits, but only humans have laws.

Habits are subject to natural selection; and the more often they are repeated, the more probable they become, other things being equal. Animals inherit the successful habits of their species as instincts. We inherit bodily, emotional, mental and cultural habits, including the habits of our languages. "

Richard Bach's "Illusion- Story of a Reluctant Messiah" - "Everything in this book migt be wrong." That is the best kept secret of philosophy. It could all be wrong.
