Love and compassion. the fact that you try, you can never really, say oh shes a good parent and shes bad unless she beats her child that is just wrong. . People are all different and have different ways of raising a child. And the fact that you try to be the best you can and keep your child safe makes you a good parent in my book.

First thing is not to be selfish. You have to give up a lot of things you used to do in your single life so you can share your time with them.
The real secret is to have lots of common interest with your kids, be a part of what they do and also let them join in your fun...to a given limit.
Be there when they need you and understand their problems, most of all help resolve them.
Do things together...read, movies, play, eat, all of that stuff.
But in the end don't forget who's boss because someone has to be in control.

start early and teach them boundries, love and respect them but do not let them control you. They love it when there is consistancy and they know what to expect. They will respect you when you do what you say and say what you will do.

love of course, caring, listening, never talk down to them, play with them, dont abuse them, ect.
