Tom, I disagree. The USA has done very very well since their induction into FIFA almost 10 years ago. I remind you that they reached the quarterfinals last world cup ! I bet you they will be ranked in the top 5 in the world in the next 5 years and could win the world cup in the next 8 years. I strongly suggest America to stand behind your team like you do your troops , they will bring the cup home! 5 Billion people watch the world cup compared to the superbowl of 1 billion. Thats alot of $$$$$$$ and cdering how materialistic America is you should wake up.

Several reasons. One of the more entertaining that I heard is that since we cannot be the best at it (although we weren't the best at baseball in the world baseball classic, despite it being our "pastime") and so we aren't interested. Although, wait until we do become the best, and then we'll give the world another reason to hate us. Another reason I read about was that the sport in our country is put on the back burner, as far as fans see it. While it doesnt receive the same attention as basketball's finals right now, the fan base is growing, and more and more stadiums in this country are being built just for soccer. And there is a rumor that we might get David Beckham to play for the LA Galaxy in a couple or years...Another reason i have read about was that our youth leagues havent gained enough steam. However, I would argue that youth league soccer is the second most popular to baseball in some or most parts of this country. However, when you see kids playing in the playground, they arent playing soccer, they play touch football or something else. But with the youth participation on the rise, I think this country will start to pour out some better and better players in the next decade. All we need is to import a good coach for our national team (maybe we should steal a brazilian, like the portuguese did for this world cup).

The World cup is finally starting to get attention in the news and sport shows in the US. It's not being covered into detail as say the NBA championship series (which I think is a joke). I don't think the World Cup will ever be popular in the US as it is all over the rest of the world. But I see more American people paying a little more attention to this year's World Cup than the past ones.

The US doesn't even dominate Baseball anymore so to say that it is because the US doesn't do well in soccer is not a good argument. My take on it is that there is too much diving, or embellishing of so-called injuries. North America is dominated by tough man sports like American Football, Hockey, Basketball, and to a lesser degree, Baseball. watching someone flop on the ground after being barely touched turns most of us off. We want to see hard hits, spectacular plays, and displays of inhuman bravado and toughness. Soccer just doesn't fit that bill right now.

How can you even say that, the USA is playing in the world cup, and take very much pride that they get to play in the world cup. Why is it that almost most of the questions I see in this catagory about the Americans and everything. Everyone needs to back up off the Americans, they play just as great as the other countries that are in the world cup.

As an American who doesn't care for soccer, I would said personally I think the game is too long and boring. As an avid hockey fan I love its fast pace and non-stop action. Perhaps if they made the field and goal smaller and shortened up the matches the game would be more popular for Americans. Just my thoughts.
