I'm bored and dissatisfied a ready for something new.... and I'm really considering taking a year off to travel to California. And I don't mean a year in California, I mean a year to TRAVEL to California (I live in Delaware.) So, my question is... if you have done this before (especially anyone who has done this during the 60's or early 70's), what did you do? Did you take the southern route, northern route, or the middle? What did you see? Where did you break down? What was your favorite experience? What drugs did you try? (haha.) And once you got to Cali, what city did you stay in? I'm looking for things that you typically wouldn't find on the East Coast... things that are natural, beautiful, or odd. Things that you think everyone should see before they die. Thank you so much if you're willing to share your experience.

If you were a guy, I would tell you to hitch hike. You meet the most interesting people that way. They are willing to help (they gave you a ride) and you see things from 100's of other peoples perspective. BUT you are a girl and that brings out a whole different kind of person...sorry. If you can get a big guy to go with you then do it. I hitched for a while out of necessity and have many stories to tell. I now pick up hitch hikers whenever I see them. Everybody has a story of why they are picking you up, or why they are hitching. And each of them is unique.

See America from the view of Americans....cliche but true.

Not an old head, but I have traveled the US and Europe. In my opinion go north. I have seen many beautiful places, but the one I will always return to is Glacier National Park, MT. The "Going to the Sun" road is truly spiritual. You may find yourself in the situation of an old friend of mine that I told about GNP who was heading to Alaska and never made it any further than Glacier.
Good luck.
