A mystery is fine, but a "feel-good" book that is exciting and interesting would be great too. It's for a family trip - husband and wife 30's - 40's and 15 year-old daughter who will mostly have her Ipod in her ears. Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks.

The Alphabet Mysteries by Sue Grafton are great. They aren't too graphic or too gory and are quite funny.

The first three are called:

A is for Alibi
B is for Burgler
C is for Corpse

I think all the family would enjoy these greatly because they reach every part of that audience. While Clive Cussler and the other authors mentioned thus far are great I find their appeal is largely to men. Sue Grafton appeals to all readers and various ages.

Intensity or False Memory - Dean Koontz

You might also try abridged versions of Tom Clancy. The editors tend to leave out all the weapons detail and just leave the story. Also look for Clive Cussler or Jack Higgins. They're action-oriented and move fairly quickly.

The best suspense book on tape / CD for a lond car trip is any of the books written by Clive Cussler. The best series of books I have even read or listened to. Have used them myself on long car trips, the Dirk Pitt novels are the best.

If you are looking for something that is really funny I suggest the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy. I had read them but listening to them made it even more hillarious to me and it might just get the ear buds out of the ears since they just made the movie.
