The best way to do it is practice. The more situations you experience, the more your confidence will build. The best way to develop your personality is to learn yourself. Go out, do something, get to know yourself, get comfortable with yourself, accept yourself.... and you're on your way. make eye contact with people when speaking to them. Try to put yourself in their shoes, think about what they're seeing, but don't dwell on the negative. It is said that the more intelligent someone is, the less confidence they have. That is because intelligent people can over-analyze situations, and are aware of things that some less intelligent people are. Just remember we're all in the same boat, meaning we are all human. And you can't please all the people all the time. Just get out and do something, because the more you do, the more experience you have, and the more experience you have, the more you know yourself, and the more you know yourself, the more confidence you have. Think about sports, a great way to know thyself, and the exercise will leave your brain firing on all cylinders.

I think there are 2 steps:

1. Confidence in your self - build your feeling of self-worth by doing things that you can excel at and challenge yourself. Some examples would be sports, karate, music, anything you are interested in that you would like to get better at. By doing this, you take pride in yourself and that will make you more confident (really!). It also gives you something interesting to talk to people about!

2. Practice - you will only get more comfortable in large group situations by being in them more often... each time you will find it easier and easier to interact with everyone.

Develop some new interests and get into a group that covers that topic or go back to school and take some speech/debate classes. It will be tough but you might just find it easier after a while than you ever thought it could be.

Get a job selling something, it's the best way to overcome being timid and also great experience in understanding human nature.
Good luck to you!
