good question. the answer is quite simple.... the government doesn't see free education (k-college) and free health care as a priority for all of its citizens....
many first world countries have this!!!
by privatizing health care..... companies makes zillions of dollars in by charging outrages prices for health care and prescription drugs.... it's the good and bad of a free market.
it's a shame that a country so rich couldn't provide basic health care to all of her citizens!!!!!

There are several reasons. First, most Americans do not like the concept of 'socialism' or 'communism'. Free education and health care may not be either, but to many on the Right they would. They would complain about the costs if the states or government should pay for it.
Second, American tradition has always been more 'personal' centered. In this, Americans continue the tradition of the hard working Puritans by believing if you work hard then you can get anything you want.
This isn't a definitive answer, but it's the best I can give.

Because its a free country. Either you live in a free country OR you get free stuff from the government. You can't have both.
In the U.S., we have traditionally believed that a free economy was the best way to allocate goods and services. That means that people pay for the things that they need. By doing this, people are allowed to make their own choices, and they select the things that are most valuable to them with the money that they earn.
Why doesn't the United States buy food and housing and clothing for its citizens? Same answer. We have learned that socialism doesn't really work the way it says. In the end, if all these things were paid for by government, the quality would go down, the costs would go up, and people would take them for granted. It's not a good system.

This is a great question. I have been wondering about this myself. I do know that low-income people are getting help from government agencies. But, the ones that abuse that system hurts those that really need it. And we have a few abusers in our city, but they know how to work it, so they don't get caught. The government keeps cutting costs on all issues, the health care, education, you name it they cut the funding for. This is because the United States is broke. But, the taxes are rising and the income gets lower. And to make it these days, a married couple both have to work and single people sometimes has two work two jobs to make ends meet. Those married and single need help to get through the high costs of living.
I have heard that the United States is sending money to other countries to provide free education and health care for those who are less fortunate than we are. Yes, those young children need to learn how to be independent to help their country grow.
I really don't know if I'll ever understand!

I am pretty sure that we have free education.
As for health care there are 2 big reasons:
1. Socialized healthcare is almost always worse than privatized healthcare. Doctors are not payed as much, and people will visit the doctor much more frequently.
2. More importantly, Insurance and drug companies are huge lobbies that spend lots of money on canidates. Therefore, those canidates are not going to try and pass a law to cut into thier profits or destroy their company completely

First, there is free education up to 12th grade. Second, healthcare has too many variables can cause wide swings in the cost of healthcare. It's more likely that statewide health insurance would be more possible than a national program.

Free education is available from the pre-kindergarten to the 12th grade level. Unfortunately, free health care isn't available, largely because the Republicans, who only give a damn about the rich, wouldn't stand for it.

That is a very good question. It would seem in a country so hell bent on making the whole world more like us we could take something away from other countries and help provide our own people with the knowledge and health they need to succeed.

Because as a free adult, you should take care of this yourself. It is the meddling of the government in education and medicine that has led to the decline in student achievement and the extraordinary high costs of both.
Unfortunately, our government has abandoned the Constitution in providing this charity.

It doesn't exist anywhere on the planet. Even Grades 1-12 aren't free Oh; you might not get a bill so you think that it's free, but the taxes you pay (all taxes Fed,st.,local, sales, property,Soc sec. amount to about 40% of everything that you make) are the bill.
Many European countries economies are breaking under the burden of their cradle to grave care, and are beginning to look to systems more i line with the U.S.
