In the South, traditions are passed on over the years-which is why a lot of people that aren't from the southern region believe we are "backwards". We don't sit around crying because we lost the Civil War, but we do still honor the Confederate soldiers who lost their lives in it. From the moment we are born, we are taught that we are different from the rest of America, a difference we embrace and take great pride in. Southerners have their own way of speaking, acting, relaxing, and eating--we are truly a seperate culture. Yankee can be a derogatory term, but it is usually just a statement of fact. My mom has lived in the South for over twenty years, after spending the first half of her life in Ohio, and I still call her a Yankee (affectionately of course). Southerners know we are different, and we love the fact that we are, and that few people from around the nation truly understand why we are the way we are. So if you come down here and get called a Yankee-just take it in stride. We're not trying to insult you (usually), we're just recognizing that you ain't the same as we are. Y'all come back now, ya hear?

Well the bitterness over losing the Civil War still runs deep in the south in some places. There are still predujices in the world unfortunately.
People from the south and the north tend to have different lifestyles too. Northerners are from the "big city" they live a fast paced life. Those in the south feel more comfortable sitting on thier porches sipping iced tea living a much slower lifestyle. So it would make some sense that Southerns may not understand why you would want to live such a crazy fast paced life and act strangely around you because they simply don't understand why.

I grew up in New Jersey but moved down to Maryland. which is a border state between North and South. I don't have problems in Maryland, but when I go into Virginia, out of the DC Metro area, I feel like a Yankee. There's definitely a different culture, in which everyone has a place, but there is no place for me. I also get creeped out by all the Confederate flags. I would never live in the true South. "Yankee" friends who tried it said they would always get in trouble for being too outspoken. For example, if we Yankees have a problem with our kids school, we would go confront the principal to get the problem resolved. This would be considered impolite in the South. I have lived in other parts of the country and could always fit in fine, but I know the South will never be for me.

Same reason Brits call Americans Yanks. It denotes that while we are the same at some level "you" are very different from me. Southerners find Yankees to be arrogant, self-absorbed, and condescending (almost to a person). Plus we cannot understand just why in tarnation you would EVER want to live in the polar regions!

It is the southernors way of Identifying with fellow southerners. thus feeling a part of a greater sum. this alleviates a certain inferiority complex that southerners have. based on their perception of northerners borne out by the first answer to your question.

Because the south is strange. They are about 40 years behind the rest of the country.
I'm from California and we had to live in Georgia a few years ago when my husband was in the Army. It was freaky. Like stepping back into 1956. I wasn't impressed.

Because in a LOT of cases, they're still fighting a war they lost almost 150 years ago. My Mom went through the same thing when she was in Georgia during WWII. It's not EVERYONE, to be sure, but there are MANY places that still harbor ill will.
