We do so all the time. New medicines to extend our lives and treat diseases. New products that are safer to everything than what we currently use. New materials that can protect people in dangerous situations (combat, construction, etc).
Everything is a learning experience. Mistakes have and will continue to happen. Rather than scream about them, the best thing is to learn from them.

Modern chemistry brings new meaning to the quip better living through chemistry. Not only are new materials being developed that make living easier and safer, but new meds are being developed that can lengthen life. Diseases that ravaged humanity are being treated if not conquered. The downside is that in the past we dumped waste in bodies of water (and rivers)and are paying the price as we try and clean it up.
