Something may have spilled in that spot, killing the grass and tainting the soil. You may need to dig it up and fill in with new top soil. First, though, try seeding and fertiziling. Be careful with the fertilizer though - if you put too much, it will actually kill the grass - I have a half dozen "burnt" spots in my yard from hubby accidentally over fertilizing!

You could have cinch bugs. They cause the grass to die out in certain spots yet leave the rest of the lawn alone. Is the area that's bare shady? That would also cause bare spots. Grass needs lots of sun to grow. If you use weed killers and it got on your grass, it would also kill the area it was sprayed on.
