Ajax is very powerful stuff - but its really useful in populating forms and interface elements in a web page without refreshing or reloading. I second the first poster's suggestion that you really ought to consider Flash for such a thing, since just about everyone has Flash anyway.... its graphics model would be less flaky than a web browser, and you wouldn't have to worry about the behaviour of different browsers.
