I'm sixteen and would like to make some extra money...any suggestions? I would like something easy to do, but I would still be able to have lots of spare time with friends.

If you were in Maine, U.S.A. right now, you could make a fortune. We have had over thirty days of rain and murk and flooding and just awful weather and all of our back yards look like hay fields!
If you had a car (driver's license) and a big trunk, you could put your lawn mower in the trunk and just go from house to house and you would have so much money at the end of the day you could take three or four people out to dinner with you! Seriously, mowing lawns is a pain in the neck, isn't it? It's "too much like work." And I certainly respect why you wouldn't want to have to knock yourself out to earn some cash. But look at it this way: with your headphones, decent tunes, a fair attitude and a great sense of humour, you're only tied up for about twenty to thirty minutes at a time and you can ask up to thirty bucks a pop. Think about it: maybe even more. Then you put your mower back in the trunk, tie it down with a bungie cord and go do another one. If you did 6 lawns in one day, that would be upwards of two hundred clams. Now two hundred clams a day is not bad at all. (Gotta get you thinking about being rich, you know.) I wish you all the success in the world. I think you are probably pretty smart and will find an easier way for this summer, but as a last-ditch kind of thing, this is a way to make bucks, as they say. Good luck to you!! - G. in South Portland, Maine, U.S.A.

What are your interests? Do you like to help people, or supervise small kids? There are lots of options. Perhaps you like plants and being outdoors. So far I've hit 3 different types of work - hospital volunteer, babysitter, yard care. You can do any of those with minimal training and some basic common sense. Best of all, you would pretty much set your own schedule to leave time for hanging with friends, to enjoy the money you are earning.

Try babysitting for one of your parents friends. Their kids are out of school to so they could probably use the help. Most work a 9-5 job and that leaves plenty of time to still be a teenager. Have a great summer and enjoy!

Apply everywhere in your town.

And don't be mad if you don't get a job.

I looked for two straight years (started at 16) before I got my first job.

Persistence is key.
