Get most of it out with ice or whatever everyone else is suggesting then take a disposable razor and gently shave up/off. Make sure you don't go crazy and shave a bare spot in your carpet.

Use ice set the ice on the gum and let it harden and then you can pick it off or you can try to cut it out without making the space visible

Try freezing it. Put ice in a plastic baggie and lay over the spot for several hours. Scrub with nail brush and have the hand-held vacume hose ready to get up the little crumbs.

Try to freeze it with ice (or ice in a bag) so it will be brittle. Then chip at it or hit it with something hard until it breaks apart and you can pick up the little pieces. You may have to carefully cut out any pieces that will not budge.

You need to use ice to freeze the gum. Not easy to deal with I know. Make sure the 'gum chewer' knows how many problems they have caused!!!

Apply lighter fluid, it will break down the gum in no time, then clean the area with soap and water. {check in an unseen area for colorfastness, but I personally have never had it fade anything.)
