That's not true, it's an urban legend.

At the very end of this sequence, as the three main characters move down the road and away from the camera, one of the larger birds (often said to be an emu, but more probably a crane) standing at the back of the set moves around and spreads its wings. No munchkin, no hanging -- just a big bird

You can see it in the background at the end of the scene in the Tin Woodman's forest, just as Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and the Tin Woodman are marching offscreen as they sing "We're Off to See the Wizard." It's almost impossible to see unless you're looking for it.
If you have a newer copy of the movie, you won't be able to find it... they edited it out of the newer versions.

Its in the woods, where they are all skipping and singing together. I want to say it is right after the witch appears to the Tin Man on the house. You have to look in the back ground in the woods. Its a black shadow, you see the person fall w/ the rope, and just swing there. I haven't seen the movie in a while but i know its in the woods. Before they get to the poppie field.

I just looked at it. It is not a hanging, it is a large bird. Definitely. Emu perhaps? It is when they set out on the Yellow Brick Road after the fireball incident.

there scene you are refering to is when dorothy and scarecrow find tinman. after the witch leaves (i think) there is something that looks like it is moving back and forth in the forest ( like a body hanging). it is not a body. it looks like part of the set to me but what do you think it looks like
