Ben was the best thing that ever happened to the Steelers, and now half his fans are calling him a stupid selfish idiot because he wasn't wearing his helmet. Ben was acting 100% within the law, and driving on city roads (probably less than 40 mph). I mean I can't really blame him not not wearing a helmet under those circumstances! Everyone who is mad at him needs to realize THEY aren't perfect either! Yinz are pissin me off!!! The only thing we should be worrying about is that Ben gets better so he can go on living a long happy life.
GO STEELERS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Most of the people who are calling him dumb for not wearing a helmet have been calling him dumb for not wearing a helmet for a year now. Ever since it became well known that he does it without wearing a helmet people have been saying he was an idiot for it. They aren't calling him an idiot as a general thing, it is calling him an idiot for making a stupid decision. Yes he is 100% within the law. That doesn't mean people don't think the law is stupid. Actually the law is kinda stupid considering that passengers are still required to wear a helmet. Guess that way if the driver only has one and picks someone up they can hand theirs over. Personally I hope he gets better, yet I still think he should proably wear a helmet. Although depending on the one he wore all it would have prevented was the gash to the back of his head. Remember depending on the helmet they don't really go down enough to prevent a jaw from being broken.
To old school Yinz is Pittsburghese although most use yunz.
As to the one who commented about it being against his contract, sorry but you are mistaken. Nothing in his contract prevents him from riding a motorcylcle or riding without a helmet. If he was injured and out they could try to go after him under the risky behavior clause but actually nowhere does his contract say anything more specific.

What happen was sad! { I wish him a fast recovery to get well soon }
Ben was not ever the best thing that happen to the Steelers your very wrong there's been some great players through history play for the Steelers.
Mean Joe Green
Jack Lambert
Terry Bradshaw
Franco Harris & many , many more
I feel sorry for him and like i sad i do wish him the best!
But anyone drives a motorcycle with todays { stat's } can see its not safe to ride without an helmet, never mind the laws your head cannot take a hit like hitting the ground at any speed.
People can trip on something walking and break their nose or jaw nobodys turning on Ben this is just a fact.
Common sense goes along way everone has it. But if people don't use it things like this happen.

Because that is the nature of Pittsburghers. We Pittsburghers aren't really player fans we are Steelers fans. The team is the pride and joy of this city not the players. Pittsburghers always love the team but the players are only loved as long as they are contributing to the team. As far as wishing Ben well, we all do as you would with anyone who has been hurt. However, being within the law doesn't make it any less dumb to drive without a helmet. Pittsburghs laws still state no one is allowed to sleep on a refrigerator, and it is still illegal to bring a donkey or a mule onto a trolley car. Just because it's a law doesn't make it smart.

Sorry...but I LIVE in Pittsburgh. I've seen people crying over this, people yelling about how horrible it is, read papers, try to find out whatever they can, but I have yet to see ANYONE come close to call him a selfish idiot in Pittsburgh. Maybe some bandwagon fans in other places, but the real fans, who were raised on Steeler football in Pittsburgh, no. We have class, yes Ben as a Role Model for so many young boys and even girls, should have been wearing a helmet, but it was an accident, and I am not about to turn on him. I offer my deepest condolences.

Considering I am a Browns fan, I know the anguish losing a key player to a stupid motorcycle accident. Let me state that I ride. That being said let me say that there are too many people counting on Ben for him to take any unneccessary risks. The standard NFL contract forbids "ANY INHERENTLY DANGEROUS ACTIVITY NOT DIRECTLY RELATED TO FOOTBALL". It is generally not enforced because it's hard to tell these big stars what to do. If he doesn't miss any game time it wont cost him any money. Things change if he misses any playing time.
I has to be understood that I can't stand you Squeelers (Especially the fans that where Pat's fans two years ago!!),but ,I like and respect Big Ben (just wish he played somewhere else.).
The fact that he is still riding a bike after what happened to Winslow last year makes me think mabye he's not as intelligent as i thought.
Hope he gets better quick because even I dont want to watch Charlie Batch!!!! lol

I don't think they are turning on him they are disappointed because he has a responsibility to the team and the fans for future success.Yes he is awesome but to not wear a helmet on a bicycle is irresponsible never mind a motorcycle reguardless of the state law.I am a Steelers fan and I hope more than anything for a speedy, healthy recovery!!!I would not wish this to happen to anyone never mind "Big Ben" !You say WAS the best thing...you've already written him off...he'll be back...he is and will be better and continue to play in Pittsburgh.GO STEELERS!!!

Ben's pretty much the man which is why people are pissed. He'a role model and should be acting as such. He may have been in accordance with the law, but not with common sense. What is did is being called "selfish" because he KNEW there was a possibility of death/injury which is selfish only because he didn't put the team first. I don't necessiarly agree with that line of thinking, I'm just telling you what Cower and Bradshaw and Brady said. And it doesn't matter if he was speeding, your face +pavement is never a good combo. I think people are more disappointed than angry.

I'm from Findlay Ohio, and met Ben on a daily basis. I didn't hang with him or nothing, but saw him enough to know that he thinks hes unstoppable.Yes he is a damn good football player, and this incident is horrible, but he needs to know anything can go wrong at any moment. If he has a contract with a super bowl team that he led, he should have had enough common sence to put on a damn helmet. It wasn't just him on the road and people drive like idiots. Just imagine how much better off he could have been with the helmet on...

I agree with just about everyone that has answered this question already. Simply put he was stupid for not wearing a helmet and he ruined the teams chances this year for a Super Bowl repeat because he was selfish and not thinking about the team. The Steelers gave him alot of money to play and now their investment is seriously injured. Terry Bradshaw was right again - should wait to ride when you retire.
