The name Mumbai comes from the name of the Hindu Goddess Mumbadevi. The Portuguese named it Bom Bahia (Good Bay) in the 16th century. The British simplified it to Bombay. It was orginally a bunch of islands but they were merged together in the 1800's by a civil engineering project. But yes there is a bay there.
