Ok well it looks like Lara read my mind, because I was thinking the exact same thing. Now that is scary. Lara are you reading my mind?.
LOL, all kidding aside, I do believe "The Exorcist" is very scary, even to this day when I watch it (and I like watching it alone, to help scar the bajezzers out of me even more) I still see things out of the corner of my eye.
The original "Omen" is not "scary" scary, just "what if" scary.
and "Salem's Lot" is my all time favorite scariest movie. The "Master" Vampire is so scary looking. If you have read any of my past answers, you will see that I have stuck with "SALEM'S LOT" as being the scariest for me.

The orginal Final Destination was a great thriller. They went downhill from there. The second one seemed to be more about gore then trying to be scary. The third one was good but just not really scary. Although you have the advantage in and that you get that song playing. Yeah you know right when someone is supposed to die, because let's face it horror movies are so predictiable anyway. Haven't seen very many movies that truly scared me though. Silent Hill is a great thriller style horror movie too.

so far for me none of them..i've watched several "horror" movies, and in each i look for something to grab me and draw me in..The grudge was just plain stupid...Saw and Saw two were just slaughter movies as Hostel...But Hostel was even more so..The movie that may scare me, if it ever came out, would be one where the plot is carried through, and the details are carried through, not forgotten or overlooked as they commonly are..
You may have guessed it by now, not only do i pay close attention to horror, storyline, but also the props used in the movies..Sometimes i see someone get injured, but later in the movie the injury has moved!! what's with this? I read and write horror, though i know my writing needs work i think someone(not nessecarily me)) could do much better at scaring people...could it be that we're running out of things to scare people with?hmmmmmmm.....

if it's hollywood, i gotta say it has to be the exorcist - not just because of the effects, but because of the thought of having someone possessed that badly, it's scary.
if it's japanese, ju-on the grudge or ringu (the ring). low-budget movies but definitely deliver on the chills and thrills.
