Is it hard to learn it when you're familiar with Excel VBA?
Is it oriented object and is it more convenient to program your own classes than it is in Excel?

Programmers who are more into linux and an open source environment will prefer openOffice because it gives them the flexibilty to contol what the program does.

It is a lot more flexible because you will never hear a complaint like "how do I do this" or "how do I do that"....you are basically engineering your documents to do things according your own program and commands. I think its more versatile and reliable when it comes to programming your own macros and functions.

Yes it can be object oriented depending on if you are an object oriented programmer. Most perl or cobol programmers find it hard to create object oriented programs since they like to see their entire program in just one class.

"OpenOffice Basic is a variation on Microsoft Office Basic, which is a variation on Visual Basic, which is a variation on the original BASIC that those of us of a certain age learned as our first programming language."

If you know VBA, then I think you will definitely prefer openOffice and you will be able to learn it quickly.
