Wow, first off, what an AMAZING question. Kudos to you. Unfortunately I don't have an absolute answer to your question because it has many different elements to the problem. Alot is politics and unfortunately there are many people who would like to see the rich to get richer and the poor to get poorer. There is a on-going "brainwashing" going on right now to make people think that by giving the rich tax breaks and credits, that money will "trickle down" to the poor. The trickle-down effect has been tried and tried again in America and truth is, no matter how much we want to maybe ignore it,is that IT DOESN'T WORK.
There are many "government-assistance" programs that provide just enough money or services to help the poor, but does little, short of the employment office and social services, to offer these real people real solutions to getting out of poverty. The homeless are a whole different story together...they are shut out, ignored, and viewed as human failures, even though the only difference between them and the judgers is one paycheck. There needs to be some kind of comphrehensive program available to all people regardless of income/race/family origin that includes a way to eased into the workforce, avoiding the whole "hand-out" issue. There is no ONE answer, but when there is awareness, such as the Breast Cancer Awareness program, then they will come. People need to share their voice, and Yahoo Answers is a great way to start that voice.

Because you have to get the resources out of their natural state and transform them into useful products. The minerals and nutrients in dirt don't do anyone any good unless someone farms it to produce food. Then, someone has to transport that food to the people who need it. Humans have been so good at doing this that we have increased our population to the point where more capital intensive farming and distribution methods are needed to supply the amount of food that huge populations demand. In certain places in the world, the population grows faster than the economy. The poorest people in these places starve even though there are abundant resources. They don't have the economic means (combines, fertilizer, trucks and farm machinery) to make use of the all the resources. It's possible that someday everyone's population will expand to the point where the entire world will outgrow our production capacity and lots of powerless people everywhere will starve. More likely many places will run out of water first (there is a very limited amout of unpolluted freshwater on the Earth). People who have the means to produce a lot don't just give their products to the powerless and poor of their own country or other countries because deep down most people don't care about people they don't know. They may pretend to, so other people like them. But once they have power, they'll rarely sacrifice it to help the powerless gain more power. The world is a cold, dangerous and vicious place. In some places it may have a pretty veneer, but underneath it's all the same. Once you've fought to get a little bit of comfort and safety, you're not going to give it up for someone you don't know.

I have mixed feelings on this issue.
I believe the government gives to much aid to other country's, helping them with food, medical & housing.
There isn't enough help for the poor here in the U.S.A. , there are thousands of hard working americans whom can not afford health insurance or food for their familys, yet they can not have goverment asistance because by their (the goverments)standerds these people make to much money.
Therefore the people struggling to make ends meet, end up working two jobs & leaving their children to care for themselves, causing another whole set of peoblems.

Yeah, I don't quite understand either. I think that in so many of the poor and 3rd world countries, their governments/military are corrupt for one thing and this doesn't help anyone. So many countries in Africa don't even have a sustainable environment to be able to create resources so it really affects them. It makes me feel really sad, so i try to do my bit and i sponsor 2 children through world vision, hopefully it can make a bit of difference to a child and their community.

GREED.

What I don't know is: what's the point in spending a fortune on weapons for wars, when that money could be going to help people who really need it, rather than for destruction.

It makes me sick - good question, I wish there was a resolving answer!!!!
