No. You just have to make ballance between those two aspects. And by doing that the most important thing is to not lose yourself.

It depends what you mean by "ambitious."
Men do have one luxury women do not: They don't give birth, nor are physically the nurturer for a baby at a young age.
In some ways, this is unfair, but I'm not sure how it can change since it's based on the biological reproductive process. The fact is that a woman often has inborn nurturing maternal instincts herself, and any child is first attached to the mother (actually viewing her as an extension of himself, until the identities separate as the kid ages).
So a woman has two very important things in her life in conflict with each other: Her professional and personal lives.
In the 70's and early 80's, the feminist movement claimed a woman could do both without any sort of compromise. From what I can tell, many professional women discovered that they only had so much time and energy to commit, so ultimately something suffered.
I know it is much more common now for a woman to choose (of her own volition) to reduce some work hours in order to spend more time with her family and caring for personal matters -- simply because she feels more fulfilled living that way than burning the candle at both ends.
I would not say that an extremely professionally ambitious woman automatically makes a mess of her life, but the father is often not as relationally gifted to deal with the kids as she is, and she often provides a secure emotional refuge that he is unable to simply by biological temperament. (Again, exceptions exist, but I'm talking in general.)
Please note that I think an overly ambitious man who is more committed to work than family is short-changing both his family and himself and thus "making a mess of things" as well.
The dangers of ambition that places achievement ahead of family goes for both men and women. Stress at home (from not focusing enough on it) contributes to stress at work and vice versa, so both ultimately suffer if one ignores the needs of the personal life for the professional one.

This statement is false. A woman's life is her own, ambitious or not. She is responsible for the kinds of decisions that she makes in her life whether the out come makes a mess out of her endeavors or not. If her ambition is to become a crack addict or get a degree in PC Repair there will always remain a realm of possibilities towards her own actions.

Probably because you have to think like a man. Self centered, egotistical, have my dinner ready, yadda, yaddda yaddda. I have the world's problems on my shoulders. The business won't run properly without me.
Come on girl, we have to work smart, not hard. We don't think with a p e n i s, so we ultimately, use our brain. You CAN do it....you don't make a mess of your life, it is just a little upstaged for now. Take a quick breather, if your personal life has changed, it will soon be for the better, to accomodate your success. I would not lie to you!!!

In one of your questions you were a man, 32, unmarried. In another, you were a woman with 2 kids....if you're going to play this game, please at least be honest about who you are and what you'd like to know.
Or are you a multiple personality and/or conjoined twin - if the 'tother, you'd be a first mixed sex conjoined twin.

it happens to both men and women. its very hard to balance everything, one or two aspects of your life will eventually suffer so, its just a matter of how much damage is acceptable. sorry for being too negative but it is true

It certainly does seem that way. The aggressive woman is a "*****" while that is a quality that holds value for a man. It is rediculous!!

Not at all. Women that are highly intelligent are so rare that it is refreshing when you see one that lets it all hang out.
