If someone is bad . . .Is it partly because they are ignorant and life is just too difficult for them and they need to take a short-cut or take a break by breaking the rules? I ask because I am trying to understand a family member. I'd like to just think the person is ignorant and can't help it and is just too overwhelmed with life and so therefore betrays family and anybody else routinely.

I think a simpleton still knows right from wrong...
and wants very much to always do right...
because wrong has severe and unpleasant consequences.

I think people that are very bright, are better capable of deception and rule breaking...and the moment you put a label on them that they are ignorant and just don't know any better...you just handed them the excuse they need to keep trying because eventually, they'll succeed in their duplicitous activity.

So no, I don't think so at all.
Your bad family member knows the deal and uses it to every advantage.

I also don't buy the "too overwhelmed with life"...
people pull that safety card because they are having difficulty coping with stress...usually it's a motivational / time management issue and they are so bright...they think the rest of the stupid planet will back off when they moan about being so overwhelmed.

Hold your family member accountable for misdeeds.
Be very clear when you identify the behavior, in association with your feeling about this behavior and the consequence of continued misdeeds.

example "Bob, you stole 50 dollars from mom. When you take money from mom, I get very angry because that money was intended for all of us to enjoy. Stealing is against the rules. Stealing from family is against the family. If you continue stealing we are going to kick your butt back to the stoneage."

I would think the proportion is the same as far as who is deviant or deceptive amongst intelligent/strong people (think of the Enron execs and Worldcom). The schemes they created to deceive millions weren't hatched by dummies. I agree with you in that I have family members or friends like that as well, who in my eyes just seem to be less intelligent than me because they routinely do deceptive and amoral things. But I also see people who are less intelligent but very honest, moral and who are pleasurable to be around.

I like to think that the amoral or deceptive behavior is a function of lack of intelligence, learned behaviors (from childhood to now) and plain and simple laziness. The people in my life are habitually lazy as well. I think laziness is a major reason for deception and shortcuts. Which is worse? Being born unintelligent or simply being a lazy person? Either way, do your best to not let that person ruffle your feather too much.

lots of the reason being the depressing obsession with repressing human sexuality that characterises the three so-observed as religions of the e book. people who seek for a calling or occupation in this environment are without situation responding to it. upload to this a place of meant authority and a grant of youthful entrants - particularly indoors the better closed institutions, which includes faith faculties and church run teenager's properties - and verify out have been given the proverbial alcoholic indoors the boozer. I strongly suspect that the better enlightened faith communities, which includes the Quakers, and a few diverse faiths, which includes Buddhism, do no longer go via from some thing like a matching tendency to a matching volume.
