Mahatma Gandhi.

He was a real example of how you do not have to fight to attain peace. I wish more people, including myself, could muster his strength.

His detractors are quick to point out that he wasn't perfect but that is high praise in itself. Most people feel awkward when his shining example is brought into focus. Some people are awed by his strength of character but others simply rationalize their own faults by pointing out his.

He was human, but a damn fine human.

I would have to say Hitler. He used events from the beginning of the century (WW 1) to shape the middle part of the century (WW 2) with consequences that affected the rest of the century (the cold war).

Oh there are so many....its hard to narrow it down but here are a couple:

John Glenn because it took an incredible amount of courage to go into space.

Jimmy Carter because I think he may have been the only genuinely caring president we ever had and is STILL showing the world his humanity.

Mother Theresa and this one needs no explanation.

Unfortunately, Josef Stalin - who reminds us of the absolute evil that can take place when a vacuum of leadership takes place. He is what happens when the world is afraid to challenge evil - when people assume that everyone is kind and just want to get along. He murdered many times more of his own people than Hitler did, and he is the emblem of what communism is, and should be a prominent reminder of those people who want government to be their everything... He may have killed as many as 100,000,000 of his countrymen, and no one wants to talk about him because it might give communism/socialism a bad name...
