the iron is only 6 months old and cost £150, so buying a new one isnt an option, where can you get wax paper from?

I clean mine like this but you need to be careful! Plug the iron in and switch it on. When the light goes out and the plates are hot, switch it off and unplug it. Then clean the plates (carefully, because the iron will be hot and will spit!) with a stainless steel, mesh scourer and normal detergent. If you do it quickly and while the ironing plate is hot, all the black will come off easily. Do not use a plastic scourer or a sponge (they will melt) or a brillo pad (as this will scratch the plates and the soap will block the steam vents). One of those coiled scourers will do. I hope this helps

Was it a Non-Stick Iron? What colour was it when new? If it was Non-Stick, try heating it up very hot, let it cool, and clean with 'iron cleaner' or soap and water. Otherwise, if it was shiney metal, with iron cold, get some ' Wet and Dry' abrasive from a car accesory shop, (like sandpaper but better) put the sheet on something flat, wet it with soapy water, work the iron on it and slowly get it shiney. Hard work mind.....
