I had my tonsils out when I was 18 and it is by far the most painful thing I have ever done (I haven't had a baby yet though) and I have a very high tolerance for pain. I was down for two weeks. You can not smoke. I can't stress this enough. Since you are older you will really have to keep a close eye on your throat. If it starts bleeding or becomes infected you could run into some serious issues. So you won't be able to smoke for at least a week but I say try two. Also, you can pretty much only eat liquids. I basically lived off jello. On the plus side you will lose a lot of weight and your nails will grow stronger. There's really nothing you can do to comfort yourself. Stay doped up on the drugs they give you and get lots of sleep. I hope everything works out for you.

I had mine out at 22 and u will not even think about smoking after for a few days. This is mostly due to the hydrocodone u are taking replaces the craving by activating your receptors in the brain. And smoking will cause your blood to thin and at age 23 u could bleed to death with tonsil surgery so i would wait atleast 1 week. The hydrocodone elixir u will be taking will make you sleepy about 80% of the time anyways. DO NOT DRIVE lol. And alcohol while taking drugs is never a good thing and should not be mixed.

Pain wise? you will be doped up. and after waking from surgery you will think.. WTH there is no pain i am all good LOL but it is due to the anestesia (however u spell it lol). Your throat will feel tight. Just take it easy. Sleep all you want (great excuse to sleep) get waited on hand and foot (moms are great for that :) ) Suck on ice chips (ice cream will bother u for the first couple days) after about 1 week you can start eating mashed taters and easily chewed food.

You will be living on jelly, soup (anything that can be slurped).

Drinking won't be a problem, but I don't think the health carers would take too kindly to you wanting to smoke soon after.

Ice will help numb the area, therefore can help with the pain (for some). You will have some degree of discomfort, but you will be given pain killers.

Each person recovery & pain threshold is different so no-one can say how much pain you will be in. If you imagine it is going to be the worst pain imaginable, then you will be pleasantly surprised when it doesn't hurt that bad.

Good luck - you will be fine (kids have this op all the time).

I only had mine out 5 days ago but can't even think of smoking. It really does hurt for the first few days, try to keep drinking water even though it hurts to swallow, as this will help in the long run. Also the nurse told me that the more solid food I could eat (such as toast, cereal etc) would help to prevent scabs forming which are the most common way to bleed.
Good luck.

If by "drink" you mean "consume alcohol" then you must recognise that when the alcohol comes in contact with the wound, it will kill some of the new cells that are attemptig to close it. These cells are not like the cells normally on the surface of your throat pipe which are a great more resilient. Similarly the smoke will also have a more damaging effect on the new cells.

You won't have the least interest in drinking or smoking the 1st day!...All you'll want to do is Sleep, Sleep, Sleep!

Now, Day 2...is a completely Different Story!!!

I had mine out when I was 16 and it was NOT fun! Don't buy into that "You can eat all the ice cream you want" line of thinking. Ice cream hurt! Your best friend will be the popsicle.

I wouldn't smoke. I gotta believe that'd hurt too. Good luck!

ice cream and ice pops or lollies, to soothe, crisps or toast to clear the throat, lay off the cigs, trust me on that one, my daughter had hers done and could not look at a ciggy for a few days. marginal discomfort, some problems in swallowing, gargle if you can and if all goes well you should be parting by the next weekend.
