Whales are fat primarily because they eat massive amounts of food that contains a lot of fat.

And before anybody tells you that whales aren't fat, let me assure you that they are. A wild whale has about the same body fat as a fattened domestic pig.

Whales need that fat because it streamlines their body, making it easier to swim, and to keep them warm in the cold waters in which they live.

Female whales need a lot of fat because they often go without eating for 3 months or more when they give birth as they swim to warm water breeding grounds where there is no food.

Air is less dense than water, and the hotter something is, the less dense it its. That explains why mettal melts whe it's heated. Same thing with plastic. And that's why blisters form. It' sthe skin expanding and buckling while you're burning. Well, I think it is. But anyway, water is WAY denser than air, and therefore, it heats up slower than water. So water is cold. Big deal, right? Well, yes, big deal. Sure, they can go to stuff like florida or hawaii 'n stuff, and they don't need to be very warm, right? I mean, we can swim out there without any problem like hypothermia, right? The answer is yes. They don't need much fat when they're in warm places that are near the equator. But when they go to places like Alaska or the North Pole, they need a thick layer of fat to insulate their body. So they constantly eat. And eat. And eat and eat and eat. That's why there so fat, because they'd die from the cold when they migrate up north to mate. As to why they even go up north, I have no idea why. Possibly because there's plenty of food so that the mothers can feed and produce high-fat milk that is necessary for the babies to survive. But anway, the arctic ocean can be the coldest place in the water at some times. I think it can be, like, 40 degrees F below zero

They require a lot of body fat to sustain their body temperature in very deep waters after submergence. Their blubber has a high specific heat capacity which allows these warm-blooded animals to thrive (temporarily) in deeper, much colder waters.
