they can marry up to 4 wives! well, there is something about this... it is not really proved, there is a sentence in Quran that mentions that but still not every one agrees on the same meaning of the sentence.
some say that God mentioned it but in the following sentence he prohibited it (coz the sentence said: you can marry two or three or four but you have to be fair. then after two or three sentences God said that: no one can be fair ever but God).
others say that since men before Islam used to marry like 100 women at a time and Mohammed could not prohibit that completely coz then they wouldn't believe in Islam, God made it easier for him and permitted only four.
others say that God allowed men to marry 4 coz men are more appreciated by god than women...
no body knows, and do not believe any story coz nothing is proved to be what God really wanted!

Not only 3 even 4, the behind philosophy was that to support the poor women among the society. This idea is no more applicable in the present era. It was favorable during the war times, when many men used to killed and they left their wives alone.

Muslims marry up to four wives for only a few, extreme reasons, one of those reasons being that the first wife, or wives, are barron and cannot have chilren. They have to ask for permission. This has nothing to do with any selfish reasons people may think they have.

Not a Muslim myself. My answer is based on knowledge gained during discussions with Muslim friends. It is said that with a view to give a life of dignity to war widows (since men were killed in war, leaving behid widows), Islam allowed men to marry upto 4 (not 3) wives.

from what my moslem friends say, the actual idea is that if your wife cannot give you an heir (i.e. a son), then you can have up to 3 other wives to give you one
obviously, today this is misused as an excuse to have a harlem!

because his wife may have problems like being crazy, cant bring babies, or they cannot live with each other...for example she loves another man, he loves another woman, thats what is happening in usa but man in us cannot marry two or three at the same time....

It is 4 wives...to procreate...spread their seed...populate the earth...have tons of kids (God likes that I think)...(oh and to make them feel like studs) Bragging rights...it is nasty. I would not want my husband going and wiggling his bait in 3 other ponds. Ugghhh.

Its called polygamy and the Mormons believe in it too.
I myself think one wife is more than enough.
If they want to have more than one more power to them.

they should not be allowed to destroy the life of three women..However if he can take care of all & as long as women r happy ....no problem ...Also I know it is seldom possible...
