A party for the new mom and baby to be. It was originally started to help the new mom with the financial burden of all the new items that she would need to raise her baby. Some people don't agree with having subsequent baby showers with each additional baby, but I personally know that you can barely save anything from the first year and will always need help with those items if you get pregnant again.

Usually there are silly games and then some finger foods and gifts, finally cake. You can mix it all up though however you want. Most of the times close family or friends throw it for you. I believe in inviting men, a good way to do this is to let them know they can come but they must bring a pack of diapers for admittance...haha, it's great, you will really appreciate those diapers later!

A baby shower is a party in which expectant parents receive gifts or money for their expected child. By convention, a baby shower is intended to help parents get things that they need for their baby (such as basic layette items), especially items they may not be able to afford. It is a fairly recent tradition in the United States and in other cultures influenced by American culture or media.

Traditionally, a baby shower is held only for the mother-to-be, and only women attend. However, many people choose to have baby showers for both parents, and some people have a men-only shower. It is not uncommon for a parent to have more than one baby shower, such as one with friends and another with co-workers. A baby shower is generally arranged by a close friend or relative of the parents-to-be. Traditionally, it was considered improper for a family member to host because the event centers on gift-giving.

Baby showers have become more common in the past few decades, as families have become smaller and each child gets more individual attention. Though they are traditionally only held for the first child, they can also be arranged for subsequent children and for children who have been adopted. It is common for the host to provide baby-themed games during the shower. In some regions, shower favors (small gifts for the guests) are common.

Not all Americans hold baby showers. For example, in Jewish tradition, nothing may be bought for the baby before it is born. But many American Jews today do not subscribe to that tradition.

A party thrown for the mother-to-be and the new baby, where friends, family etc. are invited to bring gifts for the baby. This is a way mom can get things the baby will need and some things she may may not even know that she will need. Usually cake and refreshments are served. A few different games are played. Usually this is done for the first born and occassionally women will have one for each new baby.

Another excuse to have to buy someone an extra present. I don't agree with them. I feel that you should give a gift for the birth of the baby. You shouldn't be expected to buy two presents. Family members of course normally buy things along the way. I dont think they are that common here in Australia anymore. I have never been to one and have never had one.

Hey
Baby showers are a gathering where your friends shower your unborn baby with gifts, personally i think we need to have a mommy shower ;-), after all, im the one carrying the baby! And have a baby shower after the birth of the baby! Baby shower comes in handy as it also lessen the financial strain put on the expecting parents...

It is a gathering when family and friends 'shower' the parents-to-be with gifts (usually necessities) for the new baby. It is usually given for a first born only but many people now have them for subsequent babies now, too.
I was given one by my co-workers when my (then 9 year old) daughter moved in and was to be adopted. Then I was given one by my family after my son was born (after because i was hospitalized early and the shower had to be postponed).
