Latch onto the words Long Scale and Short Scale, A million is 10^6 (6 zeros) in both scales.

On the Long Scale (British) it goes up by increments of a million: a billion is a million million, a trillion is a million billion, a quadrillion is a million trillion ie 12 zeros in a billion, 18 in a trillion and 24 in a quadrillion.

On the Short Scale (American) it goes up by increments of a thousand: a billion is a thousand million, a trillion is a thousand billion, a quadrillion is a thousand trillion ie 9 zeros in a billion, 12 in a trillion and 15 in a quadrillion.

The long scale was developed in the late 15th Century by Nicholas Chuquet, a French mathematician,

The reason why the short scale has proved more popular is that it meshes better with the metric system of kilo-, mega-, giga-, tera-, prefixes etc which increments by a thousand at a time.

Anyone who thinks 8 zeros is right is, I am afraid, completely wrong. Whichever scale you are on, all named numbers always have a number of zeros that is a multiple of 3.

On the British scale 10^9 (9 zeros) is sometimes called a milliard. Not used much because 10^15 would be a billiard and that means something else (snooker and billiards).

Depends

In the UK, 1 Billion was traditionally 1 million million and therefore had 12 zero's.

However over the years we have started using the American Billion, 1 Thousand Million which of course has 9 zeros

1 billion lets start with the basics
1thousand=1*10^3
1million=1*10^6
1billion=1*10^9
so 1 billion= 1,000,000,000=1 with 9 zeros the answer is 9
