By putting into application what you have learned, this means using it or practicing.Take math for example,if you take a few math problems everyday and go through them, you are keeping up and it will not be forgotten. In English if you seek out the subjects you are studying and go over them by finding literature etc... that fall into your categories, the revision will stick.Discipline goes along way but in the end it is the shortest path since you study so much less at crunch time and the stress factor decreases so test times are less stressful and marks are generally higher.

That is a tough question. Well, I always wanted to get the best grades I could. Like you said, often the information is lost after the test. However, be sure you understand all the concepts because there will be a final at the end of the semester/quarter. You need to retain that information to get a good grade overall. The less you understand after a test, the worst you will be when reviewing your material for the final. Keep that in mind.

Also, it is true that knowledge is power. Even outside school. When you speak intelligently about subjects, people respect you a lot more. So that should also be incentive to retain what you have learned.

I have worked as a TA in high school for history. It is amazing what information you can retain when you grade. You actually might want to try it your senior year. I really learned an abundance of knowledge that I can regurgitate now.

Study hard, but don't forget to take breaks. Everyday review everything that you've learned to keep from forgetting it. It helps to remember the material if you relate it to the real world - instead of pressuring yourself to remember it for a grade.

Try to get it into your long term memory. Use whatever creative ways you can think of, this will make it stick better and for a longer time. Start studying well ahead of the test so it's not last minute cramming. And - most importantly, I've found - try to get it to make sense. If you can get even obscure facts to make sense just because that's the way they are, it'll be easier to remember.

If you truly LEARN the material throughout the week or 9 weeks for preparation, you won't forget it. I have learned through teaching that hands on is best. Example: if you write out notecards to study from your notes you tend to remember better. Just my observations.

The best way to do this is to associate what you are learning to real-life situations. Become involved with the enjoyment of learning new things, and if you can pin these new things to situations in your own life then remembering becomes easier. Think, "if you don't use it...you lose it!"

THE SAYING, "USE IT OR LOSE IT" APPLIES HERE. I AM 63 AND TO THIS DAY I HAVE FORGOTTEN A LOT MORE THAN I HAVE LEARNED. THE ONLY WAY TO RETAIN WHAT YOU LEARN IS TO USE IT INYOUR EVERYDAY LIFE. THAT IS WHY WE FORGET SO MUCH, WE DON'T HAVE OCCASION IN OUR EVERYDAY LIFE TO USE OR APPLY WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED. GOOD LUCK!
