Well, it really depends on what you like to play. The Xbox is great for FPS, which stands for First Person Shooter. Ever played Halo? That is what MIcrosoft seems to have based the majority of its games around. It's mainly FPS. I've played some platformers on Xbox, and the controls to not lend themselves to any sort of graceful play. The term "platformer" comes from the old NES games like Super Mario Brothers, where you were jumping from platform to platform. Xbox also has Morrowind, which is an RPG (role-playing game), but the controls are jerky, and again, there is no grace to the game. It's very cut and dried, and again, it's in first person mode.
PS2 is not much on FPS at all, but the PS2 excells when it comes to platformers. Games like Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, Kingdom Hearts, Shadow Hearts, etc etc are wonderful platformers. Playstation is also the system that has the rights to all the Final Fantasy games, which are excellent RPG's. Don't forget that all the PS1 games you have will play on a PS2, and the PS2 can even use the PS1 memory cards, though you can't save a PS1 game on a PS2 memory card, and vice versa.
Graphics: Xbox
Gameplay: PS2
Speed: Xbox and PS2 are pretty even, though PS2 has more load screens
Game Titles: PS2
Versatility: Xbox. Though the PS2 makes a MUCH better DVD player than the Xbox does, the Xbox has the advantage in that you can store music from any CD you play in the Xbox. You can also buy software to use your Xbox like a karaoke machine (if you like that sort of thing). You can even remix the music you have stored.
Memory: Xbox, though you can't take your game with you on a memory card like you can with the PS2. The Xbox saves everything on a hard drive, and it has a LOT of memory, but if your Xbox stops working, you are screwed for any saved game files you may have. The PS2's game files are all on a memory card, so you don't lose any information if your PS2 dies, but a PS2 memory card doesn't have even a fraction of the space on it that the Xbox's hard drive has.
Accessories: Xbox and PS2 are evenly matched.
Game Pricing: PS2
Bottom line: Xbox wins when it comes to graphics, but PS2 wins for actual gameplay (in my book, at least). The kinds of games you like to play should matter when choosing a system. If you don't know what kinds of games you like, see if you can play different games at a friend's house or something.

The Playstation 2 has better games.
The XBOX has better graphics.
From a repair store owner's standpoint: GET A SLIM Playstation 2. When the XBOX's internal hard drive dies, the system is USELESS!!! You cannot use an xbox with a dead hard drive -- and as we all know from owning PCs, hard drives do not last forever. And you cannot simply replace an XBOX hard drive, they are LOCKED to the motherboard!
Slim PS2s fail every now and then, but parts are readily available and easily installable, and cheap.

I prefer the X-Box I don't own one myself, but the graphics are almost twice that of the PS2 and you get Fable, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic and the GTA series. Plus no expensive memory cards because it has lots of internal memory. And you also get X-Box live if you online game. The only drawback is the size and the price.

i would say PS2 because it has pretty good graphics and it makes the game for life like (water flowing, grass blowing, flowers, anything else that doesn't look like crap.) San Andres 1, 2, and 3 look like crap but the newer 1s look realistic so buy the PS2 they are making more life like games for it and the memory cards are cheap. i also have an illegal CD that holds all my memory on it ohh yeaa!! i don't need a memory card thx Gameshark :)

PS2 if you're into more than just sports and actually like playing a great variety of games. However, if your thing is sports sports sports, go fo the XBOX.
