Diarrhea is a good one. They have a tough time telling you to come in anyway after you tell them that. You can say something like, "I'm sick, but, it's the kind of sick where I can't be too far from a bathroom, you know?" They'll get the picture.
Or you could just call in and say you need a personal day. Family business. If they ask what, tell them it's private.

I would go today. Wait until Friday to lay out. Long weekend. Tell your boss that you woke up and didn't have any lights or power to get ready for work.

The more outlandish the better because they will think you couldnt possibily be making it up. Ie yesterday my housemate phoned up saying "im going to be about an hour late becasue i was locked out my house in my boxers getting the milk in, and i need to wait for the locksmith to turn up", and they believed him.

when you say you are ill, it is possible that the manager will ask you to provide a doctor statement for the reason.
it is very possible for me if i just simply tell my boss that i have a family business to do today and tell him i will do it as fast as possible so that if possible, i will go to office half day but it seems that it is not possible to do. Tell him that you are sorry for this urgent but unavoidable issue

If u r the "hard-working" just tell the truth, could be OK
But if u aren´t, it´s possible no 1 will take notice of u aren´t there :)))
