It's an unpredictable mover, so you can't necessarily keep track of where it is. THey're very different in structure from mammals so there's the alien aspect to them.
I think the most fundamental thing is that we're hard-wired to be nervous of them becasue they do carry venom (even if it's harmless to humans in the UK), and to be fair, if we were in the Antipodes that could be a life-saving reaction!
I still love 'em though! I like having one or two in the house to keep the other bugs at bay, and feel priveleged that they've decided to symbiotically share my home.
A note to any mild arachnophones out there - next time you have one in the bath, look at it properly, see its fragile beauty, then, very slowly, make a dark corner for it in the cup of your hand - or a small box or opaque cup if you REALLY can't stand them - (this'll stop it panicking and running around so much), lift it out slowly and let it walk out the window and you'll feel a whole lot better about them! Worked for me... :)

I have no clue why I am so scared of spiders. But I heard something interesting. Back when the plague was going through Europe, people blamed spiders for the spread of the plague (althoug it was really rats. So I think survivors put a fear of spiders in the following generations. It doesn't mean that everyone only of European descent is afraid of spiders. But, I have ancestry in at least 6 countries of western Europe. So that could possibly explain my own fear...just that it's in my ancestral nature to have a fear of them.

I'm scared of one crawling in to my mouth whilst I sleep, I heard a statistic somewhere that we swallow something like 10 spiders a year whilst we are sleeping (I can't remember the exact figure) and that really freaked me out, so now my bedroom must be a spider free zone!

I think a big part of it is because we have been conditioned by the media and movies that they are dangerous. They are always portrayed as harmful and destructive, not helpful. They aren't my favorite or anything, but at least they serve a purpose and for the most part are harmless.

because they crawl, they look disgusting, they have lot's of legs and they're just horrible.
I have a phobia about spiders and it just makes me feel sick if i see a spider and i really freak out, i cry and shake really bad until someone takes it out and i have to see them put it outside. I just hate the thought of them i think they're gonna crawl over me and then there's that thing that we eat 8 a year! yuck!!!!!

spiders have spiky legs, and fat bottoms which are producing silky & sticky web, and sometimes they can behave quite unpredictably, and that scares the $hit out of me !
