First, don't listen to anyone who tells you to see an "optician"or yourGP. An optician is someone who makes and dispenses glasses. They are not an optometrist( Doctor who prescribes glasses/contacts) or an Ophthalmologist(Eye Physician and Surgeon). A GP can diagnose and even treat an eye condition but does not have the extra training that an Ophthalmologist does. You should see an Ophthalmologist ASAP. It sounds like you have allergic or follicular conjunctivitis but it could be something more serious. A physician can diagnose and prescribe the proper treatment.

It sounds like an eye infection. Eye infections vary, you could have conjunctiveitis, an infection of the top layer of the eye, the glands in your eyelid could be infected, your eyelash follicles could be infected. Go and see a qualified optician immediately. If you normally wear contact lenses put on your glasses instead. Use a clean cold compress to ease the swelling and try not to scratch it. If you scratch your eye and then touch your other eye you could end up with both your eyes infected.

I think your eyes have been subjected to light rays for an extensive amount of time [probably at sunrise as well]. try covering your eyes while sleeping, start using sun glasses, take plenty of rest and put sliced cucumbers on your eyes once in a while, if symptoms presist go see a doctor.

It could be an infection but without seeing it, no one can really help you out on here.
Go and see a doctor or optician as soon as you can.
