For instance, is it against the law to not tell your job or file taxes and so on.

Yes and no. You don't have to volunteer it; but if you are asked your status, and your status is relevant, then you have to answer honestly. For example, if you are applying for welfare benefits, whether you're married and how much your spouse earns are relevant to whether you get the benefits. I'm not sure about income taxes, but it might be relevant there, too, because the deductions you take if you're married might be different from those you can take if you're not married--I think married couples get a smaller deduction, and if that's the case then you have to disclose whether you're married, or you'll take too big a deduction and you would then be committing tax fraud.

Not if you never use your status for anything legal.

However, the first time you do (like to visit your spouse in the hospital), it gets on record, and you'll have to deal with the IRS.

You do not have to tell your job.

you need a marriage liscence to get married. if you dont tell anyone they probably wont know, but they can look it up because its on public record.
