Position on the periodic table: metals on the left of the line, non-metals on the right but the ones next to the line can be metalloids.
metals - conduct electricity, have metallic luster, are maleable & ductile
metalloids - have some physical properties of metals but behave chemically like non-metals
non-metals - don't conduct electricity, not malleable & not ductile
