We cry when we realize how much money we just spent to watch a movie without car chases, gun fights, or space aliens.

yes, they're acting, but that's when they prove that they are good actors, good scriptwriters, good producers and good director. that's when you would know that a sad movie is really a good movie, when the pain and agony in the story radiates to you and feel like crying as well though the incident did not happen to you.
it is a sad movie, and to have it in full effect, the pain and sadness on it should be amplified and it could be only amplified if they (staff and crew and the actors) can make it real and relay the feeling to their audiences.
if you watch a sad movie and you didn't cry, there could only be two reasons: one-- you're too insensitive, or two-- the cast and crew are senseless dorks

A good movie will make you feel as though you are a part of the movie, and so you will laugh when something funny happens, cry when something sad happens and get angry when someone is causing another trouble in the movie.

Because it is a sad movie, and a lot of people live themselves into a movie while watching it. And for that little time while the movie is on you imagine the characters as real people.

It's about the storyline. If we get so engrossed by watching a film and it brings us to tears, it shows the actors are doing their job right by bringing it over so real.
Did you ever watch the film "The Champ" with Jon Voight and Ricky Schroder? At the end you can't help but wipe your eyes, so sad but brilliantly acted.

All humans have many things in common.seeing a sad movie or reading a sad story,we replace ourselves with the actor or the hero in the book,so we get sad or cry .

Because we're human, and sad movies can remind us of that.. Its the human condition that we all suffer from, and naturally, just as babies cry when they see other babies cry because they are so new to this world, we cry when we see others in pain.

It is a catharsis. You empathize with the characters and allow your emotions to go where they are being led. The point of the acting is for you to believe a certain situation is happening. It is a release of emotion and it is thought to be good for you.

I think that we kind of put ourselves in their (the characters) shoes, and we feel sorry, or sad about how they might feel. I think that the other reason that we cry is because we think that the character (if one of them is lost- dies) we get annoyed and sad for the other person.

Maybe it triggers feelings off of a bad time in our life? Beaches reminds me of the strength and bravery of a good friend who in the end took his own life!
