I have noticed that my guinea pig hes been getting these cramps or spasms (im not sure) and he just 'freezes' and usually falls over. This usually occurs when he scratches himself...he scratches, freezes, falls on his side, and in about 5 seconds he's back to normal...as if nothing had happened! What is this? Should we consult a vet? Is it deadly? Please Help!

You really need to get your guinea pig to a vet. It sounds like he has mites, which is a common, but painful condition. Little tiny microscopic bugs burrow underneath the skin of the guinea pig causing extreme pain and itching. Sometimes the pain is so bad that guinea pigs can have seizures (which it sounds like your pig is suffering from). If left untreated, it can cause death as the guinea pig may stop eating completely because he is so miserable. Guinea pigs with mites also tend to scratch so much that they actually scratch through their skin causing open sores and missing hair.

Good news is that it is a very common parasite and is very cheap and easy to treat. You will want to take your pig to a vet, though, in case something else is going on. Check out the link below for more information.

Sometimes animals have calcium problems that will cause them to jerk or have muscle spasms. Try giving your Guinea pig half of a rolaid with calcium once a day for around four days. It should help.

Hi,

If this were to happen to my guinea pig it would scare me terribly! The first thing I would do is to call a vet. and ask them questions!

A vet. could tell you possibly why such a thing would happen and what steps to take from there.

Good Luck!

Hi, let me guess.. is ur guinea pig a female? If it is, then this is what we call "on heat". When it is on heat, it will freeze and allow the male to mate with her.

If it was up to me to make a decision, I would call the emergency number for a veterinarian in your area. What you have just described sounds like a serious health issue.

If you're concerned enough to say that he needs IMMEDIATE help, then you should call a vet ASAP.
