Yes, they are worth it, and you can get great Mac's for not too much money.

I'm a big Mac fan. I've had 3 over the past 2 and a half years, upgrading each time. From a video editor's point of view, YEAH, Macs are worth the money, especially for high end applications like digital imaging, audio, and video editing. I have several DVDs from semi-professionals, and you can always tell the Mac user vs. the PC user, just by looking at the quality of video.

As far as a business perspective, if you're just starting out, it's OKAY to start small, with less than optimum equipment. If you're sucessful, then you can upgrade. However, you don't want to stick yourself with something crappy. Macs and higher end video equipment have a market for resale. PCs, on the other hand don't have that market. Once you buy a PC, you're pretty much stuck with it.

Final Cut Studio has a lot of bang for the buck. If you're a student, it's real cheap! It has so many apps with it that integrate very well, and contains about 46 Gig worth of applications and content.

Overall, using an Apple is so much more intuitive, you will find yourself saving time, and we all know that time = money.

Pentium 4's are fantastic for video editing. If you are on a budget, I'd look into getting a PC with a P4. The mac vs pc debate is often heated with opinions masqueraded as fact - so I'm really not sure macs are that much better "for anything multimedia." See if you can find some mac/pc benchmarking tests on the net before making a final decision.

Try building a custom computer. 2 video cards and a nice Dual core Intel processor will do, use Windows though so u can run almost any other program. Macs are very VERY limited and have many bugs.
the 2 video cards will help in graphics and graphic speeds and the Dual Core will help with the speed of what you are doing
