When writing business letters, I still use Yours faithfully or sincerely as that is how I was taught, but apparently it is now more acceptable to use Best Regards/Kind Regards (as per an email). This is the case when sending to people who you have a vague acquaintance with. I personally think this is too infomal and shows a lack of respect, but maybe I am being old fashioned (at the grand old age of 34!). Does it really matter? Does the recipient care?

I would be interested in what others think.

Best regards/kind regards is the idiot's way out of saying yours faithfully/sincerely - which they do not know how to use appropriately.

Yours faithfully to someone you know.

Yours sincerely to someone you don't.

And please, never, ever use the phrase ..."please don't hesitate to contact MYSELF..." grrrr. The correct phrase is ..."please ... ME" not MYSELF!

And at 34 you are a mere stripling.

For professional / business letters, and if the recipient is not an aquaintance, or is managerial still use "Yours Sincerely"
"Yours Faithfully" is still a formal signing off, but for someone that you have had some dealings with, and have written to before. Also when you are asking for something from the reader - ie, information, a response etc...
"Best / Kind Regards" is over-familiar for business use, and should be reserved for friends and close collegues.
This is not official info, just what I percieve to be acceptable when letter writing.
Hope this helps.

Intresting question. The matter of fact is that it all depends on you relation ship with the person. Kind Regards is usually used when you answer for the first time back to someone you do not know. I send and receive emails all day long, and after a while you just type the information needed and sign your name. it has been overstated an email form a formal letter. plus all those little sigs at the end, end up as kb and clogging up you mail box. There for it is common practise where i work to be formal at first and then just respond. But it is to evey individual how to use this

I still use yours faithfully/sincerely when writing business letters, although the same rules still apply. "Faithfully" if you don't know the person or don't know the person all that well, and "sincerely" for if you know the person or if you and the recipient consider yourselves to be friends. In truth, it's very rare that you'll have a good enough connection with someone to use "sincerely" in a business letter, so "faithfully" is generally the better option to use.

I tend to think that "Regards " often sounds a little too impersonal for me. Not that "Sincerely" is any great shakes either, but that's the one I sign off all my letters with. I've tried "Yours Truly", and it didn't work for me. Sincerely gets it done succinctly and, for me at least, with the appropriate level of personality.

Hope this helps!

Business letters still require a professional salutation - i.e., if it is addressed to say Dear Mr Jones then it will be signed of Yours sincerely, alternatively if it is addressed to Dear Sir it will be signed Yours faithfully. E-mails are different.

No, it's just another Americanism to use Yours truly etc. If you start a letter with 'Dear Sir/Madam', you should always end with 'Yours Faithfully'. If you start a letter with 'Dear Mr./Mrs.', you end with 'Yours sincerely'. Notice the use of capitals and lower case too.
