Ultimately, it is the doctor's decision whether to allow your pregnancy to go beyond your due date. Most doctors do not allow the pregnancy to extend past the 42nd week. The reason it is the doctor's decision, is that the doctor will review your tests to see if the baby is getting too big and you should be induced right away, or if more time can pass to allow for you to go into natural child birth. I was induced at my 41st week and eventually had a c-section because my daughter just did not want to get out of the coziness of the womb. All went well in the end. Good luck!

You should avoid getting induced if you can help it. Induction increases your risks of ending up having a cesarean. It also can increase your baby's risk of complications such as heart rate accelerations/decelerations. Some babies don't tolerate inductions well. Plus, sometimes your due date isn't always accurate or maybe you are one of the few who have long gestations (some women can go as long as 44 weeks and be full term with normal-sized- around 8 lb- babies). For someone like that a 40 weeker would practically be premature and could have problems. Also, if your membranes are ruptured prematurely you can have problems with your baby's position coming down the birth canal and that too can lead to a cesearean if you are not diliating properly. The baby's cord can also become clamped if the bag of waters is broken too early before the baby has come down far enough on it's own. I've had 3 children, the first 2 were induced early (38 & 39 weeks) and both ended up ceseareans, last one was a home birth. The home birth was by FAR the best experience yet!
Just let your body and the baby decide when is the best time and don't risk the unneccesary problems that come with unneccesary interventions. Childbirth is not a medical problem- it is a natural process.

Most doctors won't induce at 40 weeks unless there is some risk to you or the baby. If all is healthy, just wait and enjoy life before becoming a mother. It is a huge change and you should just enjoy it and know that baby will come when it is ready. Get lots of sleep, eat out and see movies in a theater while you can. Babies come when they are ready. I know it is hard to carry the extra weight of a baby when you are already tired but just rest and enjoy the last of the kicks and crazy movements...they will be over soon and a new life for you and your baby will begin. Congratulations!

It is between you and your doctor. If the doctor thinks it is medically safe. They will induce on your request. My first daughter was induced. If you are married, you and your husband can dsicuss it, but it is ultimately your decision. There is nothing wrong with doing it though. Good luck.

Many doctors will induce if you have a valid reason for wanting to finish carrying your child. Frankly, I would wait and see if the magic will occur on its own. Believe me that baby is much easier to take care of where it is now. Get plenty of rest and try to let nature take its course. Good luck!

I was induced both times and yes it is your choice but the doctor has a say in it also. So you may want to be induced, and suggest it to the doctor, whatever he says he has the final say.

My doctor waited until I was 41 weeks along. You might ask him, but he'll probably tell you to wait and see if the baby comes by him/herself.
Good luck.
(Get the epidural!!! It was the best thing ever.)
