It is all about God. We are here at His pleasure. That is why if you don't accept his omnipotence, he will not accept you into Paradise.

Well, it depends on wether you think 'existence' is a question we need answered, or that we need meaning...you must realise that 'meanings' and 'purpose' are very much Human ideas and rarely translate into anything outside of our metaphysical sphere. I think existence has a relative meaning, so for example..you could say under a Nazi government, your 'purpose' is to usurp it and make a nation free..or, in times of population crisis, you 'purpose' is to make babies.
Dont however hang to the ramblings of Richard Dawkins, The Selfish Gene and so on. His books and 'science' are just elaborate word-plays that give human qualities to inhuman objects. He believes we live to propagate, which is bull. Sure, its a big thin in out lives, we need to create the next generation, but its not a 'purpose'. The idea that our genes are 'selfish' and only care for their own survival is again toss. How can they be selfish, their strands of DNA!

The way I look at it is we are just one species on the face of this planet. We happen to be the smartest species at the moment. We are still evolving so this isn't our final form if there is one. We as individuals in our large human family don't matter much ( unless your one of the few that has a lasting impact on the history of the world ) But the most important thing is the continuation of us as a species. Try not to think of it as a" does my life have meaning " because it's what you do in life that determines the answer to that question. Try to think of it as "can I do something that might help our descendants" That's what truly matters.

Well, I cannot directly respond to your question honestly. What I can say is that a meaning is not necessary for existence.
Some people hate when I use Occam's razor to justify my answers, but if it (the truth) follows Occam's razor, then I would have to say that it does not.
If all that were in existance was a box, and it did nothing, then there is no need to apply a reason for the box to exist.

Existence ends up meaning what you make it, its what you do with your existence that matters if you fill your existence with value and meaning it will last forever within you and it will carry on by people who will follow you and remember you into one generation after the other. If you live your life with no meaning and no value then its already over even while you still exist.

Hi Jay!
Now did that feel strange? I'm questioning your fleeting existence. One second here, one second not here. But you're not really here in cyberspace, correct?
To me, this sounds like an essay question. So i'm not going to answer it like an essay NEEH :P.
I guess it depends on what religion or philosophy you hold to. If you believe in the philosophy of buddhism or zen, your existence is depedent not on others, but on an awareness of the self and realizing it!
If i were to say, 'you exist because', i wouldn't be giving you a truthful answer. Heck anybody in here wouldn't be if they said that. There is no truthful answer (i'm not trying to be nihilist either) but we are in the philosophy room :p. It's kind of like asking what our purpose is. I can't say. And it would be a lie if i tried to say i knew.
(apart from the fact that i do, and we should all go out and wear our shoes on our heads tomorrow).
Good luck with finding out the meaning of life!

It has meaning, of course! But it is not what you think it is. Every religion thinks existence is something different - but it has specific meaning. Even the lack of existence has meaning, in that it leaves an imprint on the existence that is left behind.

Unfortunately I believe that the answer is Both, and Neither. The level at which the question is asked is often the impossibility of an answer.
