Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president of the United States. He led the country during the Civil War and is generally given great credit for preserving the Union. He also signed the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in the rebelling Confederacy, although this was more of a political manuever than anything else. He was assassinated shortly after the end of the war by an angry Southerner.

The first answer, by sophicmuse quite concisely answers the question.

All other answers prior to this one and, indeed, the question itself, bode very poorly for the knowledge and education of the average US citizen. (apologies in advance to any and all participants who aren't from the US and didn't grow up in it's educational system)
