I'm pretty sure must home users don't need any of the features that only the pro edition has. Please see the excellent article on winsupersite for a list of what's not in home.
Safe the money and wait for Vista, if you want to upgrade, is what I'd recommend.
However, you can of course do the upgrade, according to Microsoft's Upgrade Matrix. With a Full Version that shouldn't be a problem. There used to be a Windows XP Pro Step-Up Program, where you could cheaply upgrade Home to Pro, but that has since been discontinued by Microsoft. Maybe you can still find a version on ebay?

Don't download the copy of XP professional from torrent websites. Buy the genuine copy at any office stores.
