At the level of higher education (this section that you posted in), I don't think colleges and universities should be in the practice of "encouraging" student growth beyond the awarding of grades for the work performed. By the time students get to college, they should be prepared to take responsibility for their own learning. Things like pats on the back, gold stars, "recognition" banquets with motivational speakers, etc, are for K-12 students and football players.
