The most reliable way to sex a turtle or tortoises is to look at its tail. Males have a thicker and bigger overall tail than females, but it is relative between species. It's easy when you can compare a male with a female of the same species. Different species will have different tail lengths.

You cannot sex a hatchling turtle. Usually when turtles get around 4-5" SCL, depending on the species, you are able to sex it.

There are secondary sexual characteristics, but these are not dependable. Male aquatic turtles (sliders, cooters and painteds) have longer front claws than females, but ince again, it takes them 3-4 years before they exhibit this. Female aquatic turtles are generally larger in overall size (sexual dimorphism). In box turtles and torts, the males will have a slight indented (concave) plastron (bottom shell).

Sometimes it is not obvious until they reach sexual maturity, for males that is when they are 2-5 years old (or approximately 4 inches in length).

The easiest way to determine the gender of your turtle is that male red eared sliders have much longer claws on their front feet than females. As well, the tail of males is longer and thicker. The cloaca is located farther from the body in males, and males also may have a slightly concave (curved inward) plastron (shell).

~Pink toenails is a good, but not foolproof, method. You could have a gay turtle. If it smells like dead tuna or vinegar, it's a girl. A more time consuming method is to wait and see if it lays eggs. If so, it's a girl or a cross-breed with a platypus.

With land tortoises the male's shell on the underside is slightly concave, the female's is not.
